One-on-One Interview with 2012 Affiliate Manager of the Year Kim Salvino
Kim Salvino, the Head of Publishers at buy.at U.S., has been a standout within the affiliate industry for many years. Both her ethics and her positive fire have won her fans throughout the industry. I count myself among them. After several nominations, Kim won her first Pinnacle Award for Affiliate Manager of the Year in January. I caught up with her this week to get her unique perspective on affiliate marketing. Enjoy!
This is your first win in four nominations, how does it feel?
In one word? Amazing! This is my third nomination for Affiliate Manager of the Year, and the company

Think Facebook Drives Sales? Think Again.
In my previous post, I referenced the fact that Facebook qualifies as one of the “Big Four” in ecommerce, according to a report by research firm Forrester. Despite this designation, an interesting reality has emerged for some major ecommerce players: Facebook leaves much to be desired when it comes to driving ecommerce sales.
A Bloomberg story that appeared February 17 indicates retailers including GameStop, Gap, J.C. Penney, and Nordstrom opened storefronts on Facebook only to shutter them not long afterwards. GameStop opened its Facebook store last April and closed it six months later. Gap opened and closed

Googorola deal gets green light in Europe and the US
The proposed merger between Google and Motorola is moving full steam ahead, following the announcement this week that the deal has been approved by both the European Commission and the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
The news that the deal had been approved in Europe came February 13, though European regulators, who had initially shown hesitance regarding the merger, say they will still be keeping a watch on things. The Commission’s VP Joaquín Almunia said as much himself in a statement on the matter:
“[It] does not mean that the

The Ugly Underbelly of Affiliate Marketing
I love affiliate marketing. There are many reputable, ethical merchants who sell quality products and services online, and many merchants and affiliates who use ethical methods to market those products and services. This article isn’t about those businesses; it is about the rest of them.
Anyone who has been in the affiliate marketing world for awhile, especially the CPA affiliate marketing world, knows that the industry has been prone to more than its share of unethical practices. What are those practices? Why do they occur? Should you care? What can be done about them? In this article I’ll try to provide

News Brief: New Jersey Latest Star in Affiliate Tax Showdown
Things just got a little tougher for affiliates in the Garden State. State Senators Paul A. Sarlo (D, Bergen and Passaic) and Raymond J. Lesniak (D, Union) have introduced nexus legislation that will impact affiliate marketers living in New Jersey. Again, the primary argument being made is one of fairness for brick-and-mortar retailers. The bill (Senate Bill No. 1305) “revises the sales and use tax to specify certain persons deemed to be sellers and to clarify tax collection responsibilities of certain other persons and agents.”
Michael Cheng, the CEO of West New York-based eCoupons.com, says his company

Pay Close Attention to the “Big Four”
Detroit automakers are making a comeback, so it is appropriate to remind marketers of the phrase the “Big Three,” which was used to collectively refer to Chrysler, Ford and GM. There was a time when American businesses closely watched the Big Three because together, they offered real insight into the health of American manufacturing and the vitality of the economy.
Now, it seems, the same phenomenon is taking place in the online world. A new report by noted research firm Forrester suggests that those who depend on online marketing and ecommerce for their livelihoods need to closely observe the “Big

Klout’s first acquisition, local app Blockboard
Social influence measurement company Klout is gaining, well, clout with its very first acquisition, reports TechCrunch.
In a February 7 post on the company blog, Klout announced a new deal with Blockboard, a local and mobile app for connecting people within a neighborhood. Blockboard essentially allows neighbors to communicate about hyper-local issues, with a Blockwatch for crime and infrastructure problems, among other features – a sort of online community to compliment an existing physical one.
“With their experience, Blockboard brings an awareness of how social media can be meaningfully woven into

What Do Dieting and Social Media Marketing Have in Common?
What Do Dieting and Social Media Marketing Have in Common?
Stop the Insanity!
“It’s official. It’s now impossible to keep up with the irrelevant data, false claims, illogical conclusions, and plain bad journalism associated with positive claims about social media,” says Robert Bacal, CEO of Bacal and Associates.
It’s hard to not feel just like Bacal. The din of misinformation is a major hurdle for our businesses. We’re constantly being told “do this, do that, but not like this, this way.” And then everything changes.
“No single person could even locate most of the misinformation. It’s just as impossible to explain

Consumers and Retailers Buy Into Mobile in a Big Way
Even as Facebook dominated the news last week with its long-awaited IPO, below the surface was the lurking issue of the mobile market. In its filing, Facebook reported that 425 million active users (about half of their user base) visited Facebook via a mobile device in December 2011. Yet Facebook said, “We currently do not show ads or directly generate any meaningful revenue from users accessing Facebook through out mobile products…”
As a newly public company hungry for revenue, this is sure to change. In fact, rumors of a Facebook smartphone continue to swirl. While Facebook ponders its mobile strategy, however,

The Perfect Fit: Fashion and Affiliate Marketing
We’re now so used to clicking that “buy” button that we only vaguely recall the days when people raised eyebrows if you said you bought something online. Few things raised eyebrows higher than buying fashion—clothes, shoes, or accessories—items that in many instances were difficult to assess through a pictures unless you’d already seen and tried them on in a store (now we do this for a whole other set of reasons). Today’s fashionistas have access to easy-to-use services that offer multiple pictures, free shipping, and other shopping perks, which helped bring online fashion into its own. And with it has
